Toyota Industries Corporation, founded by Sakichi Toyoda, was originally established in 1926 as Toyoda Automatic Loom Works, Ltd. to manufacture the Automatic Loom, invented by Toyoda. In 1933, it opened an automobile department to produce inexpensive cars marketed to the average driver. It wasn't until 1956 that the first two models of Toyota forklift were produced in Japan (Model LA and Model LAT), being intended solely for the Japanese market. About four years later, it began exporting its trucks to Saudi Arabia, Europe, and the United States. Production of electric counterbalanced forklift trucks began in 1967, and by 1985 Toyota had produced five hundred thousand forklift units. Only ten years later, Toyota hit the landmark of producing one million units. In the year 2000, Toyota acquired the forklift truck manufacturer BT Industries, giving Toyota a significant position in the European lift truck market. In 2008, production of forklift trucks reached two million units, exhibiting exponential growth. Toyota presently has five manufacturing locations: one in Japan, one in Vietnam, another in Indiana, and two in Europe. In fact, the Takahama factory in Japan is the largest forklift truck factory in the world.
