Hyster Forklift's history began back in 1929, when the Willimette Ersted Company was formed. The company originally manufactured winches and logging carriers from its headquarters in Portland, Oregon. The company built its first forklift truck in 1935. Further development led to a Jumbo 7 ton, "Handy Andy," and and "Handy Harry" models. In 1944, the company changed its name to Hyster, and subsequent post-WWII years saw the company build new factories in Danville, Illinois; Nijmegen, The Netherlands; Irvine, Scotland; and many more locations.
